Lancaster's Cottage Museum has been shortlisted for a major new award voted for by the public which was launched by a well-known TV presenter and historian.
People are being invited to vote for their favourite hidden heritage gems across the country in the England's Everyday Heroes awards.
A total of 24 sites and teams have been shortlisted across England, including the Cottage Museum near Lancaster Castle.
The museum has been shortlisted for its work sharing the story of the working-class people who have lived at 15 Castle Hill: a small but extraordinarily preserved historic home that opens a window onto life in 18th century Lancaster.
The award, launched by Findmypast as part of Heritage Open Days 2026, recognises organisations that bring everyday histories to life through research, storytelling and public events.
"The Cottage Museum is a wonderful example of how the stories of ordinary people can help us better understand our shared history," said Councillor Sam Riches, Lancaster City Council’s cabinet member for museums.
"It may be small in size, but it offers a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the generations who lived and worked in our district, bringing their experiences to life for visitors today. We’re delighted to have been recognised in this way and shortlisted alongside so many inspiring heritage sites.”
The public is now invited to vote for their favourite site, helping to crown England’s first-ever Everyday History Heroes.
Voting is open until August 31, with a national winner and seven regional winners to be announced on September 10.
Winners will receive a donation to help fund their community initiatives.
Lancaster City Museums is encouraging local residents, visitors and supporters to vote for the Cottage Museum and help celebrate Lancaster’s place in England’s everyday history.
Lancaster City Council said that visitors can discover the Cottage Museum during its summer season opening hours and explore Lancaster City Museums’ wider programme of exhibitions, events and family activities across the City Museum, Maritime Museum and Cottage Museum.
