Lancaster district residents urged to check their details as annual electoral canvass begins

Lancaster City Council will soon be contacting households across the district as part of the annual electoral registration canvass.

Each year the council is required by law to check that the details it holds for every household are correct, so that the electoral register can be updated and everyone who is eligible to vote is able to do so.

From Monday August 10 around 20,000 Canvass Communication B forms, known as a CCB, will be sent out. This form is issued to households where the council believes the information it currently holds may be incorrect. Anyone who receives this form must respond, even if there are no changes to make.

Then, from Tuesday September 1, a further 45,000 households will receive a Canvass Communication A form, known as a CCA.

This form is mainly for information, but residents must respond if any of the details need to be changed, for example if someone has moved in or out of the property.

Mark Davies, Returning Officer at Lancaster City Council, said: “The annual canvass is an important part of making sure the electoral register is accurate and that everyone who is eligible to vote is able to have their say at election time.

“Responding promptly also helps us avoid the need for follow-up contact, including personal visits to households that have not replied.

“Being on the electoral register is not only about being able to vote. It can also help with things like applying for credit, a mobile phone contract or a mortgage.”

From around September 18 a team of canvassers will begin visiting households that have not responded to the CCB form to collect the information needed to update the register.
