A Lancaster pub has been crowned best in the UK in the annual Countryside Alliance Awards.
The Fleece Inn at Dolphinholme has been awarded the prestigious accolade at a national awards ceremony held this week at the House of Lords in London.
After scooping the regional prize for the North in April, the pub went forward into the national competition, where the venue was named Best in the UK.
The Countryside Alliance Awards celebrate rural businesses that go above and beyond in their contributions to the countryside and community. These prestigious awards recognise the vital role establishments play in maintaining the fabric of rural life, and are dubbed as the 'Rural Oscars'.
In their citation, judges commented: ‘’A well-deserved honour for a true community cornerstone. Rescued from decline by a local resident, the pub has been beautifully refurbished and thoughtfully extended, transforming it into a welcoming hub for the surrounding villages.
‘’More than just a pub, The Fleece offers outstanding locally sourced food, lively community events, and even opened a much-needed village shop when the last one closed, initially run by volunteers and now supported by the pub’s staff.
‘’A cosy, vibrant space packed with locals and visitors alike, The Fleece Inn embodies everything a great country pub should be."

The Fleece Inn was formerly owned by Lancaster-based brewery Mitchells but was subsequently bought by the Worthington family, amid fears that the pub could close and the village would lose a vital community asset.
Following a significant investment, the inn reopened in 2016 with nine modern bedrooms, a kitchen and a community shop selling local produce.
Company Director, Simeon, said: “The win is all down to the team and our loyal patrons; we really are bucking the trend in hospitality due to our community-centred approach and focus on quality, but with a warm and friendly atmosphere.”
‘’This prestigious recognition truly belongs to our entire community. From our loyal customers who travel near and far to dine with us, to our dedicated 25-strong team, most of whom have remained with us since we reopened ten years ago – this achievement reflects the special connection we’ve built together.
‘’What makes this award even more meaningful? We still have no idea who nominated us! This surprise nomination speaks volumes about the genuine relationships we’ve cultivated over the years.’'
