A new group has been set up offering support for the boating community who live on the Lancaster Canal.
A new community-led initiative, the Lancaster Canal Boaters Association, has officially launched to support and unite the liveaboard boating community along the historic Lancaster Canal.
The LCBA aims to provide practical support, share expertise and build stronger connections among boaters and the wider canal community through events, welfare services and mutual support.
The LCBA has recently been awarded funding from the Lancaster Community Fund, securing essential financial backing to establish core infrastructure, develop its website, and deliver a programme of launch events.
This initial funding will support the LCBA's first six months of activity and help grow its reach across the canal community.
John Hewson, presenter of Beyond Radio’s dedicated show to the subject, Waterside Weekly, is the organisation’s secretary.
John said: ‘’Life on the water brings unique challenges, and many liveaboard boaters can feel isolated or disconnected from local services and support networks.
‘’The LCBA was formed by a group of experienced liveaboard boaters who recognised the need for a dedicated community organisation where support, guidance and friendship can be shared.’’
Michelle Riley, Chair of the Lancaster Canal Boaters Association, added: ‘’Many boaters feel isolated and struggle to access the same services that land-based communities take for granted.
"Our mission is to strengthen the canal community through shared support and practical assistance, whether that's advice for newcomers, help with everyday tasks, or signposting to essential resources."
The LCBA welcomes anyone living aboard a boat on the Lancaster Canal for at least 50% of the time to join as a free member, others can join as a volunteer member or supporter to help assist those that do live on the water.
Members gain access to a growing suite of resources, including peer-to-peer advice and mentoring for new and experienced boaters, welfare support such as assistance with prescriptions, shopping or winter fuel, a community tool library and possible emergency grants for engine parts or heating and representation of boater interests to organisations such as the Canal & River Trust.
Supporters who do not live aboard can also register to pledge help and strengthen the canal community.
To celebrate the official launch, the LCBA is inviting local boaters, canal users and community members to its first launch event, Curry on the Cut, at Ellel Village Hall, this coming Saturday January 24, from 1:30 – 3:30pm.
This gathering will be an opportunity to meet the team, learn about planned activities, and explore ways to get involved.
To join, learn more about upcoming events or support the organisation's work, visit www.lancastercanalboatersassociation.com or contact the LCBA directly through their online contact form.
