REVIEW: We Will Rock You at Lancaster Grand

We Will Rock You is a timely reminder in today's world of why original voices matter, says JOSHUA BRANDWOOD.

Lancaster Red Rose AODS brought the music of Queen to the Lancaster Grand Theatre on Tuesday night, opening its production of We Will Rock You under director Vanessa Whittle.

Set in a future where the all-powerful Globalsoft Corporation has outlawed original music and live instruments, the show follows a band of outcast Bohemians who believe two unlikely rebels, Scaramouche and Galileo ('the chosen one') can bring rock 'n' roll back to a world that has forgotten it.

Karl Fisher-Roe led the cast as Galileo, and his powerful vocals would have made Freddie Mercury proud.

Kira Cherrington's lively Scaramouche was a great match for him, and their duet after the pair are implanted with brain chips by Globalsoft, was a highlight.

Jessie Turton and James Shields were outstanding as Oz and Brit, and their real chemistry made them a joy to watch.

Heather Bolton made a formidable Killer Queen, and Ryan Fisher brought an imposing, cold presence to Khashoggi. His leather trench coat and shades have me browsing M&S for my own, though I doubt I'd look half as cool.

Steve Johnson, as Bohemian leader Buddy, had perfect comic timing and made me laugh out loud several times. With his wild facial expressions, vast music knowledge and eccentric ideas about rock history, he reminded me of that stereotypical 70s quirky teacher who's all about "peace and love, man"!

The ensemble, including the Super Yuppies and the Ga Ga Girls, gave the futuristic world plenty of energy and personality, thanks in large part to Georgina Jackson, who took on choreography for the first time and delivered a standout debut.

Musical Director Chris Starr, making his third appearance with Red Rose, led the pit orchestra through the Queen catalogue with such energy that it was hard to stay in your seat. Vigorous foot tapping and hand clapping is permitted!

Once the buzz of the night had settled, I found myself reflecting on the show's darker side. Beneath the comedy, romance and cracking soundtrack, it's a story about a corporation stamping out freedom of expression and individuality. It brainwashes everyone into conformity.

A decade ago I'd have laughed at the idea of that happening in the real world, but with technology reshaping so much of our lives, it feels less far-fetched now. It's a timely reminder of why original voices matter, and Red Rose clearly believe in them.

We Will Rock You is running at Lancaster Grand Theatre until 7 November.

Tickets are available from the Lancaster Grand Theatre box office or online at the Grand website.
