Arrests as police crack down on assaults by e-bikers who film attacks

The Millennium Bridge in Lancaster

Arrests have been made after reports of assaults in Lancaster by e-scooterists wearing balaclavas who filmed the attacks.

Detective Inspector Adie Knowles of Lancaster Police said this was "an emerging trend" when he appeared on Beyond Radio on Tuesday.

He said police had received reports of incidents mainly on the cycle track, around the Millennium Bridge area, and also near Williamson Park.

"It's indviduals on e-scooters, electric bikes, who will come up, balaclava'd up, filming themselves and then assault someone as they cycle past," said Det Insp Knowles, speaking on his regular 'Beyond the Beat' segment.

"For want of a better term, they will boot another cyclist or pedestrian, just to film it.

"We have made a couple of arrests in connection with it, and I know the Neighbourhood Policing Team, it's one of their priorities at the moment.

"The cycle track is a main thoroughfare for people getting to and from Lancaster and Morecambe.

"We can't have people bombing around on e-scooters assaulting people. It's as simple as that."

Det Insp Knowles said if anyone knows of anybody who is committing these crimes, or has any other information in connection with such incidents, they should call police on 101 or the confidential freephone Crimestoppers line on 0800 555111.
