Morecambe’s RNLI volunteers have had a busy weekend, responding to four separate incidents so far in the hot weather.
Their first mission involved an overturned fishing vessel. The crew assessed the situation, checking for any individuals who might still be aboard and retrieving gill nets that were floating about half a mile offshore, which presented a hazard to passing ships.
Next, they responded to a report of two individuals in distress on an inflatable raft drifting near the River Keer. As the lifeboat was en route, they received word that they were able to self-rescue with the assistance of a vigilant passerby who stepped in to help.
Next, approximately 30 minutes later, they received an emergency call about a person being swept out to sea near the stone jetty. A brave bystander entered the water to perform a rescue, successfully bringing the individual to safety on the rocks.
Once the lifeboat team arrived on scene and assessed the situation, they requested assistance from the fire and rescue service, ambulance, and local Coastguard rescue team to assist with an extraction.
Their final mission took them to a person facing difficulties on the beach near the Battery while using a mobility scooter.
A spokesperson said: ‘’We are proud to report that all missions concluded successfully.
‘’As the weather warms up, we strongly encourage everyone to take extra precautions when venturing out on the beach or sea to ensure their safety and well-being.’’
