A planning application has gone in to strip out the Lancaster branch of Barclays bank to allow for a new use after it closes later this month.
The city centre bank is due to shut its doors on April 25.
Plans have gone in to Lancaster City Council to decommission the bank, which is housed in a Grade II listed building at 38-42 Market Street.
The proposed work in the three-storey property includes to remove external Barclays branding and signage, remove the ATM cash machines and fill in with stonework to match the existing walls, and remove counters and furniture inside the bank.
"The original building fabric will not be altered, removed or concealed," says a heritage report submitted with the plans.
"All existing original features will not be affected by the proposed works. The proposed works are intended to return the building to pre-Barclays occupation as much as it is possible preserving the listed building status.
"All works are intended to involve the minimum intervention and to be reversible in the future, allowing the building to evolve and maintain the possibility of new uses or layouts within the context of its listed status.
"The strip out works will be accommodated within the footprint of the bank. The works are not considered to have any adverse impact to the existing appearance and amenity of the application site and that of its neighbours."
The closure was announced in January, when Barclays said it was due to the changing habits of customers who now mainly use online or telephone banking.
Barclays said that 93 per cent of people who use the Lancaster branch have also banked using their app, online and by phone, and fewer than 10 regular customers use this branch exclusively for their banking.
The nearest Barclays branches to Lancaster with cashier and self-service will now be in Kendal and Preston.
The bank says it will provide a face to face service at the Royal Kings Arms Hotel in Lancaster, six days a week, from Monday April 29, after the branch closes on April 25.
The new service will be offering face to face financial support and education for customers, without the need to travel, including assistance with everyday finances and money management, free digital skills workshops and fraud and scams awareness events for the community.
As the replacement service is a cashless site, everyday banking transactions, including cash deposits and withdrawals, will need to be completed at a local Post Office.
