Police have given Beyond Radio an update on plans to install CCTV on the Greenway cycle track between Lancaster and Morecambe.
It’s hoped the scheme will quickly progress after funding was obtained towards the plans, from the office of the Lancashire Police and Crime Commissioner, Andrew Snowden.
There have been ongoing calls for safety measures to be implemented on the track, as investigations continue into a number of incidents in the area in recent months.
On April 5th, a woman in her 70s suffered serious head injuries in an assault on the cycle track, close to Ovangle Road.
Earlier in the year, a woman in her 50s also suffered serious head injuries that left her in a coma.
Speaking to Beyond Radio, Dt Sgt Adie Knowles expressed his optimism that a solution wasn’t far away.
‘’We’ve obtained up to £20,000 of funding for a potential scheme from the Police and Crime Commissioner, and we can look at putting CCTV along key points of the cycle track such as the Trimpell, Carlisle Bridge and Salt Ayre.,’’ he said.
‘’We’re also looking trimming back some of the bushes and hedges and adding additional lighting in vulnerable spots.
‘’Hopefully, Lancaster City Council can match fund any contribution.
‘’Surveys have already been carried out, and we’re now looking to liaise with the council. So, plans are afoot, and hopefully some good quality CCTV can be installed. It’s been long overdue, and an issue that’s been discussed for many years now.
‘’Watch this space for specific details of when it will be up.’’
