A call has gone out for budding Eric Morecambe look-a-likes to take part in a ‘living artwork’ contest at the Winter Gardens next month.
Morecambe artist Anthony Padgett is inviting local residents to enter a novel Eric Morecambe Look-a-like Remix Art competition, which is being held as part of the second Morecambe People's Biennial and the sixth Morecambe Bay Art Fair on Saturday and Sunday, June 13 and 14.
The competition takes place on the Saturday, and is a contest with a twist. The first 50 entrants will receive £40 for taking part, but there is no prize for the winner.
Anthony said: ‘’We invite Morecambrians to celebrate the centenary of Eric Morecambe's birth, and everyone to join us in this joyful occasion.
‘’While the silhouette of Eric Morecambe - the heavy frames and suit - provides our common language, the art lies in how you ‘Personalise the Eric’ and fill it with the diverse, global, and vibrant reality of Morecambe in 2026.
‘We want people to remix the icon. When 50 people walk into the Winter Gardens stage, the judges shouldn't see 50 copies of one man; they should see a spectrum of humanity using one man’s shadow to step into their own light.’’
Entrants will also be photographed and then submitted to the Town Council to use as frames in their upcoming Eric Morecambe Film Strip sculpture at Morecambe Train Station.
The Art Fair will feature paintings and sculptures by top artists including Peter & Angela Carrdus, Hannah Corbett, Walter Michael DeForest, Sara Dobson, Rebecca Findlay, Alex Harrison, Amanda Henderson, Martes Moon, Eric Peasey, Lidia Ranns, Reed Studio, Robin Ross, Sarah Walkley, Helen Williams and Anthony Padgett.
Entrants to the look-a-like competition must be 18 years old or over, and will need to provide ID and proof they live locally.
