An escaped cow has been rescued after running onto the M6 motorway.
Motorists were shocked to see the animal on the A590 near Junction 36 at Crooklands and on the M6 on Monday.
One eye-witness reported seeing the cow "charging the wrong way up the northbound carriageway".
Police were called at around 5.34pm and the M6 was temporarily closed before the animal was safely secured.
"We can confirm that an incident involving a cow which had escaped onto the A590 and the M6 has safely concluded," said a spokesperson for Cumbria Police.
"We were contacted at 5:34pm this afternoon with a report of a cow on the eastbound carriageway of the A590 near to junction 36 of the M6. The cow subsequently ended up on the M6.
"Officers attended and temporarily closed the M6 to ensure the safety of road users.
"With the assistance of several local farmers, officers were able to safely secure the animal and transport it away from the area.
"We would like to thank those involved in assisting them bring this to a safe conclusion and thank motorists for their patience."
