A dedicated servant of the Lancaster District will not be standing in the next elections after 56 years as a city councillor.
Abbott Bryning, the 91-year-old 'Father' of Lancaster City Council, was first elected in 1967.
Councillor Bryning has won 15 elections, twice been the Mayor of Lancaster, and is a former leader of the council.
He represents Labour as a councillor in Skerton East ward.
In 2022, an Early Day Motion in Parliament congratulated Councillor Bryning on his 90th birthday.
It thanked him for his years of service as a Lancaster City councillor; recognised his leadership roles in the city including his time as leader of Lancaster City Council and his two terms as Mayor; paid tribute to his work in 2015 leading a campaign to promote the rights and welfare of older citizens in partnership with Lancashire Welfare Rights Service; and praised that campaign's success at ensuring over-75s were contacted and offered a free check of their benefit entitlements.
Councillor Bryning was not on the list of candidates for the local elections on May 4, which was published today, and it was confirmed by Lancaster City Council that he would not be standing.
