Emergency services were called to a car stuck in flood water at a village near Lancaster.

Fire crews from Hornby and Lancaster were called to Gressingham Bridge, across the River Lune between the villages of Hornby and Gressingham, during heavy rain on New Year's Eve.

"Thankfully after a search it was apparent that no-one was inside the vehicle needing rescuing," said a Hornby Fire Station spokesperson.

The bridge was closed on New Year's Eve and impassable due to flood water. Motorists were being advised to avoid the route.

An Environment Agency flood alert was in place on December 31 and into January 1 for the River Lune, Conder and Keer and other watercourses from Kirkby Lonsdale to Galgate including Gressingham, Carnforth, Hornby, Wray, Bentham and Lancaster, near Burrow Beck around Canterbury Avenue, Cranwell Avenue and Bowerham Road in Lancaster, at Halton and Skerton Pool.

There were also reports of localised flooding in areas including Morecambe Promenade and Torrisholme Road in Lancaster.
