A gritter crashed through a hedge in Lancaster as motorists and pedestrians battled the icy conditions around the area.
The incident happened on Quernmore Road between Caton and Lancaster in the early hours of Wednesday.
The driver was unhurt.
Lancashire County Council provide gritting services on the roads in icy conditions.
A spokesman for Lancashire County Council said: "Fortunately the driver of the gritter which slid off Quernmore Road last night is unhurt.
"The road conditions were difficult due to new snow which had fallen, and the vehicle was spreading grit at around 4am behind another vehicle which was ploughing. We're arranging to recover the gritter today."
The overnight frost led to treacherous conditions on the roads around North Lancashire on Wednesday morning.
Local police said they had attended "a number of road traffic collisions this morning due to the icy conditions".
A police spokesperson advised motorists to take "extra care when travelling today as there is still a lot of black ice on the roads".
A bus was also stuck diagonally at the bottom of Dalton Road in Lancaster on Wednesday morning.
Residents used social media to warn others of treacherous areas.
One resident reported that Crag Road heading to Central Lancaster High in Lancaster was "like an ice sheet" with "cars unable to pass".
Another said that people were falling on the steps on Shaw Street Bridge in Lancaster.
And another resident said that the Shrimp Roundabout in Morecambe was "like an ice skating rink" this morning and The Bay Gateway was "no better".
A spokesperson for Lancashire County Council said: "Our gritters are treating priority routes but be aware that surfaces could be slippery at times, even on treated roads.
"Take extra care when driving (this) morning and leave more time for your journey."
The county council said all priority routes in the Lancaster district will be gritted this morning, evening and overnight
Priority routes only cover a third of the highway network.
"Our highways teams have been very busy over recent days working to keep the main routes moving during what have been very changeable conditions," said a county council spokesperson.
"Our gritter drivers in the north of the county carried out a number of treatments throughout last night, beginning at 6pm ahead of the wintry showers forecast.
"The salt we use to treat the roads works by lowering the freezing temperature of any moisture on the road, and relies on the action of traffic to mix it into any ice present, which means that roads can remain icy even after being gritted. Our priority gritting routes cover around one third of all our roads, but any untreated surfaces may be very icy.
"Particularly with the very changeable weather we've had over recent days, it's really important that people drive according to the conditions and, if the weather is poor, consider whether they can safely make their journey before setting out."
The forecast is for more wintry showers and frost overnight in North Lancashire, with temperatures once again falling below zero.
