North Lancashire’s proud heritage will be celebrated during Local and Community History Month this May.
Many members of the local Heritage Network will be taking part in this special month to increase awareness of local history and encourage communities to participate in activities and events in person or online.
The Network’s members include museums, historic buildings and voluntary heritage organisations many of which have adapted to lockdown restrictions during the pandemic by moving their talks, exhibitions and other activities online.
Fortunately, this May sees many Network members preparing to open their doors and events to the public once again.

A similar event last year proved popular as people shared their finds, treasures, historic objects and collections with others.
It’s hoped that Global Link’s Learning from the Past exhibition, exploring the international peace movement after World War One, will be staged at the City Museum from July 16 but until then, it can be viewed at: learningfromthepast.net
Turner prize winning artist Lubaina Himid’s intimate and emotional exhibition, Memorial to Zong, is at the Lancaster Maritime Museum until September 2021.
This powerful re-interpretation of the history and brutality of the slave trade remembers the Zong Massacre which happened as an overloaded slave ship crossed the Atlantic in 1781. It’s available to view online while plans are made for the Museum’s re-opening.
May will see the Museum’s History Detectives Club for children looking at how Lancaster-born Richard Owen established the Natural History Museum.
The Judges Lodgings is planning to re-open on May 21 with a new Breastfeeding Room and Chill Out Room for visitors with Special Educational Needs and Disability who might need a quiet space.
Children’s backpacks can be booked from reception and there will be a free handout craft which families can use during the visit and take home with them over May half-term. Garden activities will be provided too.
The volunteer-run Morecambe Heritage Centre in the Arndale Centre plans to re-open on May 18 with an exhibition celebrating the Morecambe Football Club’s centenary.
Online, Lancaster Civic Society hosts a talk on 20th Century Housing on May 12 and the Regional Heritage Centre at Lancaster University is staging an event on May 15 entitled Ballad and Song in the History of North West England.
To coincide with Local and Community History month and the completion of restoration work on its clock tower, Lancaster Priory will launch a short film online explaining the processes involved.
