INTERVIEW: 'Pink Hat Man' walking 2,700 miles from Land's End to John O'Groats and back again

A 71-year-old hiker who lives on Lancaster Canal - known as 'Pink Hat Man' - is walking up and down the UK for a very good cause.

Chris Stanbury is in the midst of walking from Land's End to John O'Groats and back again - a total of around 2,700 miles.

Mr Stanbury is aiming to raise £70,000 for international children’s charity Hope and Homes for Children, which helps get children out of orphanages and back to family.

He reached John O'Groats in late June, in pouring rain and 50mph winds, after setting off from Land's End on April 3.

Chris is now heading back down to Land's End with just under 500 miles to go, and this week passed through Lancaster, near where he currently lives.

He spoke to Beyond Radio on Wednesday as he reached Warrington.

Chris hopes to finish his walk at the end of August.

He is aiming to set two world records: as the oldest person to complete the return journey, and the fastest – as no one has officially claimed the record to date.

Originally from London, Mr Stanbury has lived on his pink narrowboat called 'Electra' on Lancaster Canal for the past year.

“Having reached 70 last year, I decided it was time for another adventure,” he said.

“I’m a keen walker and an ardent supporter of the charity Hope and Homes for Children, so something that combined the two passions seemed appropriate.

He is known as 'Pink Hat Man' because of his ever-present pink trilby, below!

“The walk has been amazing – I’ve seen parts of Britain I’ve never seen before and met so many lovely people.

“I’m a firm believer in stretching myself to the limits, and this walk is certainly testing that – but I’ve never felt like quitting. I’m having too much fun.”

Chris is walking to help the 5.4 million children confined in orphanages globally get back to family – as 80 per cent of them have relatives who could care for them at home, with the right support.

Hope and Homes for Children works in nine countries to prevent family separation, reunite children with relatives, and close the doors of orphanages for good.

The charity is backed by high-profile supporters including Dame Kristin Scott Thomas and Gary Oldman.
