Kirkby Lonsdale will ‘Dance Through The Decades’ to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee next month.
Kirkby Lonsdale & Lune Valley CIC (community interest company) received £5,000 from Cumbria Community Foundation and Arts Council England’s Let’s Create Jubilee Fund to put on ‘Dancing Through The Decades’ – an exciting a weekend of dance themed events.
The Dancing Through The Decades programme is free and open to everyone, and was conceived and produced by Jayne Davies – Storybank Arts.

Jubilee Charter Market
Thursday 2nd June, 9am-4pm, Market Square
On Thursday 2nd come along to the regular weekly market, admire the floral arches, grab a selfie with one of the giant walkabout blooms and see which decade each trader is ‘grooving down to’. Follow the market on social media for a Tik Tok treat!
Beacon Lighting Ceremony
Thursday 2nd June, 7pm until Late, Kirkby Lonsdale Playpark
The giant blooms will make a second appearance on Thursday evening at the beacon lighting ceremony in the Play Park where there will be live music and food & drink from Devil’s Bridge Snacks and The Little Barn Bar.
Live Music
Friday 3rd June and Saturday 4th, 11am-6pm, Market Square
On Friday 3rd June there will be a “street-party” stage in Market Square with live music from local bands, local food vendors and more. The perfect place to connect, celebrate and share with your community!
Choose Your Decade Disco
Friday 3rd June, 7-11pm, Kirkby Lonsdale Rugby Club
Carry on dancing at the ‘Choose Your Decade Disco’ on Friday 3rd June at Kirkby Lonsdale Rugby Club. Boogie to hits from the 1950s all the way up to 2022 and raise money for a good cause – we will be collecting donations for the #SaveTheBrow fund and Ukraine.
Games In The Park
Friday 3rd June, 11am – 5pm, The Playpark
Between dance workshops and music we will be offering some traditional games for all the family to join in with. These will include: egg and spoon races, sack races, tin can ally, the ladder game, dressing up races plus more!
Live Music
Saturday 4th June, 11am-6pm, Market Square
On Saturday 4th June there will be a “street-party” stage in Market Square with live music from local bands, local food vendors and more. The perfect place to connect, celebrate and share with your community!
Dance Performances and Demos
Saturday 4th June, 11am-6pm, Market Square (performances) and St Mary’s Church (workshops)
On Saturday 4th there will be a specially commissioned dance performance from Curious Dance Company. ‘Get your groove on’ as Curious Dance parade down main street to St Mary’s Church, where there will be free dance demonstrations so that you can learn some moves and dance along.
Performances and demos will be at: 12.15pm, 2.30pm & 4.45pm.
Teddy Bear’s Picnic
Saturday 4th June, The Methodist Church and Gardens
On the Saturday 4th June there will be a Teddy Bears Picnic in Kirkby Lonsdale Methodist Church Hall & Garden aimed at families with toddlers. Enjoy toys, mask making, storytelling, and fun!
Miss Baines for The Community Cupboard
Sunday 5th June, 3pm (3.30pm start), Lunesdale Hall
On Sunday there will be a special showing of Miss Baines – an interactive dance for local members of The Community Cupboard. Miss Baines is performed by Louise Gibbons, Northbound Dance and was generously funded and supported by; Arts Council England, Great Place: Lakes & Dales, and Ludus Dance.
Closing Ceremony
Sunday 5th June, 10.30am, St Mary’s Church
Join the morning service at St Mary’s Church on Sunday 5th June. Kirkby Lonsdale Brass Band will play and Matt Sowerby will close the celebrations with a final reading of the Jubilee poetry commission.
Handbell Ringers
Sunday 5th June, 2.30pm, Market Square
Kirkby Lonsdale Handbell Ringers will make a joyful noise in honour of Queen Elizabeth’s platinum jubilee.
