A local choir group is set to begin rehearsals again for new season of concerts.
Lancaster and District Male Voice Choir (LDMVC) is advertising for people to join them every Tuesday evening, starting August 30.
These rehearsals take place in the school room of the Lancaster Methodist Church on Scotforth Road from 7pm to 9pm.
The official leaflet that was recently sent around the local area promises that those joining will be part of a ‘welcoming, fun group’, who perform a range of different pieces from classical to modern tunes.
Speaking to Beyond Radio, the choir’s chairman Chas Matthews said: “It’s a friendly atmosphere where people can come in and just listen.
"New members get buddied up with someone from the choir who can help them. There’s no audition and the first three months are free.”
There is then a choir membership fee of £80 per year.
The choir has been running since 1899 and has a lot of local support. It is the fifth oldest choir of its kind in the country.
It’s been a difficult couple of years for the group, who have managed to hold very few sessions since 2020 due to COVID.
“It’s affected the choir, which is why we’ve done this big recruitment programme and sent out 15000 flyers in the local area," said Chas.
The choir is looking for new members in all four areas: top tenor, second tenor, baritone and bass.
“If you get too few people in any group you can’t have a balanced choir so it’s important that we get at least four people in each section, hopefully five or six," said Chas.
They now have a number of concerts and events booked in before the end of this year, and with singing season ending in June, it’s likely there will be more performances to come in 2023.
Tuesday 30th August: First rehearsal
Following Tuesdays: Rehearsals for future events autumn and winter
Saturday 1st October: Performance at Lancaster Priory Church at 10:30am
Saturday 22nd October: Concert in Garstang Library (confirmation needed)
Saturday 3rd, 10th and 17th December: Performances in Lancaster, Morecambe and a Christmas Concert
The group can be booked for private events too, while also aiming to help provide money for charities and local appeals. In recent Christmases they have made donations to the Morecambe Bay Foodbank.
