Lancaster City Council has struck a deal with a national car hire firm to make vehicles available for the public to book.
The council has appointed Hiyacar to manage bookings for its fleet of 11 pool cars, the majority of which are electric.
They said they want to make it easier for people to make the switch to using more sustainable modes of transport and reduce their reliance on privately owned vehicles.
The vehicles will be available for hire by the public at evenings and weekends.
A Hiyacar spokesperson said they were "delighted" to be working with the council.
"This forward-thinking organisation is taking a bold approach, not only utilising Hiyacar’s technology to reduce emissions, optimise vehicle use, lower grey-mileage costs and streamline fleet management, but also offering shared vehicle access to the public during evenings, weekends and public holidays," said the spokesperson.
"This makes it easier than ever for residents to access affordable car club options in the area.”
The cars are available from 6pm to midnight on weekdays and all day on weekends.
This new car club replaces the previous Co-Wheels service.
All drivers need to create a Hiyacar account to access Lancaster’s car club vehicles.
