Lancaster service will commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day

An annual service to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day will take place in Lancaster next week.

It will be held at the Garden of Remembrance at Lancaster Town Hall on Tuesday January 27 at 6pm.

The ceremony will include multi faith prayers and readings, the lighting of memorial candles, and a minute’s silence. Everyone is invited to attend and is encouraged to bring a lantern as part of a shared pledge to light the darkness and honour the memory of those persecuted and murdered during the Holocaust and in subsequent genocides.

The Mayor of Lancaster, Councillor Margaret Pattison, said: “As we gather in the Garden of Remembrance, we will pause to honour all those whose lives were taken and to reflect on the enduring impact of the Holocaust.

‘’By coming together, we reaffirm our shared commitment to challenging discrimination in all its forms and to ensuring that the lessons of the past are passed on.”

The theme for Holocaust Memorial Day 2026 is Bridging Generations, which highlights the responsibility each generation holds in preserving memory, sharing stories, and ensuring the lessons of the past continue to guide the future.

It emphasises the power of intergenerational dialogue and the importance of carrying forward the testimonies of survivors and those who are no longer able to speak for themselves.

If you’re unable to attend the Lancaster ceremony, there is still an opportunity to show your support.

Each year people from across the UK take part in the Light the Darkness national moment for Holocaust Memorial Day.

At 8pm on January 27 people across the nation will light candles and put them safely in their windows to:

• remember those who were murdered for who they were

• stand against prejudice and hatred today
