The Lancaster MP has criticised the tone set by Boris Johnson in his resignation speech as Conservative Party leader this week.
Mr Johnson quit as leader, triggering a forthcoming contest for his successor, who would then become the next prime minister. High profile politicians including former Chancellor, Rishi Sunak, announcing they will stand.
Former Lancaster MP, and current Defence Secretary, Ben Wallace, is second favourite with the bookmakers to win the contest, although he is yet to announce he will run.
Lancaster MP, Labour’s Cat Smith, has slammed Mr Johnson for not acknowledging any of the reasons why he was being forced out of office.
“It really is remarkable that Boris Johnson managed to make a so-called resignation speech yesterday without acknowledging his lies, scandals and fraud on an industrial scale which frankly got him into the mess he’s in,’’ she said.
‘’He and his party have inflicted chaos upon the country during the worst cost of living crisis in a generation. After 12 years of Conservatives in power their legacy is one of economic stagnation, declining public services and empty promises.
‘’Enough is enough. It’s not just a new Prime Minister we need, it’s a new government.’’
Beyond Radio contacted the Morecambe and Lunesdale MP, David Morris, for his reaction to the news of the prime minister’s resignation, but had received no response at time of publication.
