LISTEN: Police inspector vows to crack down on spate of motorbike thefts by youths

Detective Inspector Adie Knowles

A detective inspector said police are determined to tackle a trend of young people stealing motorbikes in the Lancaster and Morecambe area then filming themselves for social media.

Det Insp Adie Knowles was speaking on his regular segment on Beyond Radio - 'Beyond the Beat' - on Tuesday night.

This follows a spate of similar incidents across the Lancaster and Morecambe District in recent weeks and months.

"It is very much on our radar," said Det Insp Knowles.

"The trend is that you've got younger people stealing mopeds and bikes, using them to ride anti-socially, using them to avoid the police, and then they dump them and then they repeat.

"I'm aware that some of these offenders are then posting videos on social media of them riding bikes anti-socially.

"This is something we are throwing the kitchen sink at.

"There are various tactics that we are trying to do to try and knock it on the head.

"My plea to the public is that if you own a moped or motorbike you do your utmost to try to secure it. Get it out of sight, get it into a building, get it locked, do the best you can do.

"If you see young people sniffing around mopeds or looking down driveways, then we need to know that. We need to know who they are and we can go and arrest them."

Contact police on 999 if you see a crime in progress. If you want to provide information call police on 101 or the confidential freephone Crimestoppers line on 0800 555111.
