Motorists have complained that long awaited road resurfacing works on a roundabout over-ran past scheduled times causing more traffic pain in Heysham.
This came as Lancashire Highways carried out essential works at the Heysham Roundabout near the bypass this week.
The work followed complaints about potholes, and were due to take place between 9pm and 6am on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of this week.
But motorists were stuck in lengthy queues in Heysham on Tuesday and Wednesday morning, saying roads were still closed past 6am, causing delays during early morning rush hour.
Stagecoach bus company also had to divert early morning buses due to unexpected road closures.
“We are aware of reports of additional delays in the morning during the works and are looking into this," said Matt Townsend, Director of Highways and Transport for Lancashire County Council.
"We appreciate that the works may have caused some inconvenience, but we are confident that residents will be happy with the result and will see and feel the benefits of the improved road."
Lancashire Highways said the work was to begin on the south side of the roundabout, including the approach from Middleton Road, on Monday night, then move to the north side including the opposite approach from Middleton Road on Tuesday night, before finishing with final surfacing activities across remaining sections of the roundabout on Wednesday night.
"These works help keep the road surface safe and in good condition for everyone and have been coordinated with the ferries and power station to minimise disruption," said a post on the Lancashire Highways Facebook page on June 15.
"Please be advised that traffic management will be in place overnight, so allow a little extra time for your journey and follow signage on site.
"Thanks for your patience while we get this done."
But on Tuesday morning, Stagecoach said the 7.15am 755 bus service from Lancaster encountered a road closure at Combermere Road, had to divert and was delayed by up to 30 minutes.
They said a similar delay happened on Wednesday morning.
On Wednesday morning, a listener contacted Beyond Radio to report traffic queues in the Kingsway, Oxcliffe Road and Heysham bypass areas.
There were also reports on the social media pages of Lancashire Highways and Lizzi Collinge, MP for Morecambe and Lunesdale, on Tuesday morning of motorists stuck in queues near the roundabout due to a road closure after 6am, and also on Tuesday evening before 9pm.
David posted: "It’s 07.50 and still not open, absolute disaster."
Al posted: "The road is closed now, if they are going to give times they need to keep to them, this needs sorting, how are we supposed to trust these times? It’s 20.20 and the road is closed."
Julie posted: "The roundabout is blocked at 8am. Parents can’t get off Trumacar gardens to get their children to school! We have been kept awake with loud road works all night, now locked down on the estate!"
Ms Collinge had posted the road closure info on her Facebook page, saying: "I am pleased that this work will take place outside of peak hours and hope that disruption should be kept to a minimum, however be assured that I will be keeping a close eye on this."
Potholes on the Heysham roundabout were highlighted by Beyond Radio and local 'Pothole Patrollers' Sophie Lyden and Emma Bailey from Westgate Tyres (below), in March.

"This one to me is a major priority, especially with the amount of traffic," said Sophie at the time, referring to a pothole on the roundabout.
"Potentially this one is about 20 feet long. It really needs sorting."

There have been other traffic issues in Heysham recently, with gridlocks on the Heysham Bypass, Middleton Road, Rothesay Road and other nearby roads, due to a combination of roadworks and changes to the entry system at Heysham Port.

* UPDATE On June 18 Lancashire County Council said the work on the roundabout has been completed, which they said would leave "a smoother and more durable road surface for drivers".
