A sculptor from Morecambe is set to unveil his statue of one of the most famous artists of all-time.
Anthony Padgett will reveal his statue of Pablo Picasso as a boy, in Sheffield, celebrating the 75th anniversary of the artist's visit to the city and its historic fights for freedom, peace and refuge from fascism.
The statue 'Boy with Dove' will be unveiled at Weston Park, Sheffield S10 2TP on Saturday April 12 at noon.
The memorial will mark Sheffield's historic link with Picasso, the Basque children of the Spanish Civil War, the people of Sheffield who helped them, the International Brigade who fought in the war and those, including Picasso, who campaigned for world peace in Sheffield in 1950.
The sculpture is of Picasso as a boy holding a dove of peace and has its counterpart in Picasso's hometown of Malaga, Spain.
It is based on Picasso as a boy aged seven in Malaga in 1888 and his painting 'Child With Dove' of 1901 of his sister Conchita, who died of diptheria in 1895 aged seven. The sculpture will be located near the children's hospital in Sheffield.
The award winning artist, who is also known locally as a vintage dance teacher, is no stranger to creating art in Morecambe - and indeed all over the UK - that gets people talking.
Mr Padgett is the brains behind the Morecambe People's Biennial and the Morecambe Bay Art Fair, where he unveiled drainpipe sculptures of boxers Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua at the Winter Gardens in 2023.
Anthony also ran the town's first ever 'Deepfake' art exhibition at Morecambe Library and created the Praying Shell sculpture which overlooks the Bay at Bolton-le-Sands.
His sculptures of artists Vincent Van Gogh, Pablo Picasso and Kurt Schwitters are sited internationally, he has works in private, public and academic collections and is a campaigner for artists’ working rights.
Pablo Ruiz Picasso (October 25 1881 - April 8 1973) was a Spanish painter and sculptor, who was one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. He is known for co-founding the Cubist movement.
