Morecambe’s Tyson Fury speaks up for mental health

Morecambe boxer Tyson Fury is urging anyone struggling with their mental health to not be afraid to talk about it.

It’s Mental Health Awareness Week, a national campaign to raise awareness of the importance of looking mental as well as physical well-being.

Every year, 1 in 10 young people experience a mental health problem and 1 in 5 young people aged 16-24 experience a common mental illness such as anxiety or depression at any one time. Add to these facts, 75% of adults with a diagnosable mental health problem experience their first symptoms before the age of 24.

Taking to social media, Tyson said: ‘’Mental health will always be a cause that I will fight for.

‘’As someone who is still combatting and facing head on this silent threat, I vowed to always use my platform and voice to be a champion in this space.

‘’This mental health awareness week we are on a mission to fight the silence by encouraging people to get talking.’’

Tyson has been working with the charity Talk Club to start those conversations.

‘’It’s important to stay physically fit as well as mentally fit. Let’s all stay talking together,’’ he added.

The Mental Health Foundation, organisers of the awareness week, said: ‘’Thank you so much for using your personal experiences to be an advocate for Mental Health, Tyson, and helping to raise awareness allowing us to create a world with good mental health for all.’’
