"No need to panic buy' says Morecambe MP amid worries over vehicle fuel

Lizzi Collinge MP speaking in a video statement released on Thursday

The MP for Morecambe and Lunesdale has reassured motorists amid concerns over the price and supply of petrol and diesel.

Lizzi Collinge posted a video statement from Sainsbury's petrol station in Morecambe, which was closed earlier this week due to fuel shortages, but has now reopened.

Some residents who have contacted Beyond Radio or posted online this week, have said they were particularly struggling to find available diesel in the Lancaster and Morecambe area.

Sainsbury's station on Lancaster Road was closed for a few days, as signs showed 'No Diesel' and pumps out of use.

But it was open again with diesel and petrol available on Good Friday, below.

There were also large queues reported earlier this week for fuel at the Morrisons Morecambe and Asda Lancaster filling stations, with one motorist posting on the Beyond Radio Facebook page that it was "chaos" on Thursday.

Ms Collinge said: "I know people are really worried about fuel prices and supply locally.

"To be clear, the prices are going up because of the conflict in the Middle East, not something of our making but something we have to deal with.

"Nationally we have a decent supply of fuel and people do not need to panic buy.

"I wanted to share this update to reassure my constituents that I am working with the Government on this issue, and have met today with the Armed Forces Minister to discuss the impacts our country faces from the conflict in the Middle East."

A Sainsbury's spokesperson told us on Wednesday: "We are actively monitoring stock levels in all locations and continuing to resupply sites where needed."

Around 20 per cent of the world's oil trade, the raw ingredient for producing both petrol and diesel, has been halted by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz due to the US-Israel war with Iran.

In a joint statement this week, Fuels Industry UK and the Petrol Retailers Association said: "We are aware of reports circulating about fuel availability at a small number of forecourts.

"Supply across the UK is flowing normally and there is no need for any change in usual buying habits."
