Morecambe filling station remains closed as supermarket 'monitors stock levels'

A supermarket says they will "resupply sites where needed" as a petrol station in Morecambe remained closed today (April 1).

Sainsbury's filling station on Lancaster Road was also shut on Tuesday evening when Beyond Radio visited.

A Sainsbury's spokesperson told us on Wednesday: "We are actively monitoring stock levels in all locations and continuing to resupply sites where needed."

There have been concerns over petrol and diesel shortages due to the US-Israel war with Iran, with multiple reports of long queues at filling stations in parts of the UK.

Residents who have contacted us this week said they have been particularly struggling to find available diesel in the Lancaster and Morecambe area.

One motorist posted on our Facebook page that only unleaded petrol - and no diesel - was available at Morrisons filling station in Morecambe on Wednesday morning.

Another who went to Morrisons in Morecambe on Wednesday said: "Getting into Morrisons a bit hectic with cars queuing but looks like they're having petrol delivered."

We approached MFG, owners and operators of the Morrisons petrol station, to ask about the latest situation with fuel availability. An MFG spokesperson said they will not be commenting at this time.

Another motorist told us that Asda Lancaster and Sainsburys Morecambe were both out of diesel on Monday.

But industry watchdogs have said "supply is flowing normally".

Signs on the Sainsbury's Morecambe pumps say 'Sorry out of use' and 'No Diesel' (photos below, Beyond Radio, Tuesday March 31).

Around 20 per cent of the world's oil trade, the raw ingredient for producing both petrol and diesel, has been halted by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz due to the US-Israel war with Iran.

Earlier this month, Rachel Reeves, Chancellor of the Exchequer, wrote to the Competition and Markets Authority requesting it stays on high alert for unjustifiable price rises on petrol, diesel and heating oil, to support families and businesses.

The Chancellor said said she was determined to support people with the cost of living amid conflict in the Middle East and "will not stand by if firms use uncertainty as cover to push up prices and protect margins at the expense of drivers".

But last week Allan Leighton, Asda executive chairman, hit back at suggestions forecourts had been profiteering from the crisis.

"Our fuel volumes are up quite significantly and clearly demand has been outstripping supply," he said.

"Supply is tight and we are all trying hard on that."

In a joint statement this week, Fuels Industry UK and the Petrol Retailers Association said: "We are aware of reports circulating about fuel availability at a small number of forecourts for one retailer.

"Supply across the UK is flowing normally and there is no need for any change in usual buying habits."

Beyond Radio has contacted Asda for comment.

In February, the government launched a new Fuel Finder system which shows a map of petrol stations across the UK, including in the Lancaster and Morecambe District, and their prices.

Check it HERE.

The RAC has a Fuel Watch service which has the latest daily UK fuel prices HERE.
