Colourful costumes and brilliant books were the order of the day as Lancaster and Morecambe schools celebrated World Book Day.
Mossgate Primary School in Heysham were among the local schools marking the global celebration of books and reading on Thursday.
This year, the school wanted to promote reading for pleasure through highlighting stories and books with a 'funny' theme with funny stories, jokes and riddles, humorous poetry and of course, wearing clothes or costumes.
Over the last two weeks, families have been invited into school to share new books with a 'funny' theme which MOFFS (Mossgate Friends, Families & Staff) funded. They could also complete a World Book Day themed quiz and enjoy with a biscuit and drink.
Reception had two special visitors on World Book Day - Christie the Cat (Morecambe FC mascot) and Callum Jones ( first team player) who presented the children with 82 books donated by Morecambe FC Community Foundation.
Lots of classes took part in the BBC Live Lesson for World Book Day and then the older children became buddies with younger children and shared the different books they brought in from home.
Y6 children led and performed funny jokes and poems to the whole school during assembly and the school also presented books to our World Book Day themed quizzes from our parent book events.
Years 5 and 6 also enjoyed reading descriptions of book characters written in French and then using their knowledge and dictionaries to match the description to the character.
Millie from Lancaster & Heysham School Sports Network led Aladin themed active sessions with Years 1 and 2 and the children also enjoyed a book-themed scavenger hunt around the school grounds.
Rob Smith, head teacher at Mossgate, said: "A huge thank you to our fantastic staff for once again providing inspiring book related activities with special mentions to Mrs Booth and Miss Frankland for organising.
"Thank you to Mr Thwaites for leading the assembly with Y6 and Mrs Wood for organising the active sessions with Lancaster & Heysham School Sports Network. Finally, thank you to our wonderful families for working together to achieve success for our children at Mossgate."

Meanwhile, Cat Smith, MP for Lancaster & Wyre, was out and about on World Book Day, dressed as Mrs Banks from Mary Poppins!
Ms Smith visited Lancaster Ryelands Primary and Nursery School where children from various year groups read to her.
"I was so impressed by their reading skills," said Ms Smith.
"They are a testament to their incredible teachers. The staff go above and beyond to ensure every child develops a love for reading, as both a life skill and something to be enjoyed!

"Of course, I couldn’t miss out on dressing up for World Book Day! I chose Mrs. Banks from Mary Poppins - one of my childhood favourites! Mrs. Banks was also a suffragette, a nod to International Women’s Day which is just around the corner!
"A huge thank you to both Hambleton Primary School (in Poulton-le-Fylde) and Ryelands Primary School for such a warm welcome today. It was fantastic to see so many young, enthusiastic readers, as well as the amazing work local teachers do to support and encourage our children to keep reading!"
St Mary's Catholic Primary School in Morecambe also celebrated World Book Day, and had a visit from Christie the Cat who helped them officially open their new school library.
The Morecambe FC Community Foundation and first team were making visits to schools across Morecambe and Lancaster to deliver books.

A post on Bolton-le-Sands Primary School Facebook page said: "Well what a fantastic way to kick off World Book Day! We’ve enjoyed a loud and exciting worship including a fantastic competition guessing the mystery reader.
Our worship was even interrupted by the local police officer (Mrs Woodburn) chasing a robber (Mrs Sissons) with her Swag Bag.
"A huge thank you to everyone for making World Book Day very special at BLS! Parents we really appreciate all your efforts with costumes."

Great Wood Primary School in Morecambe also celebrated World Book Day. Here are some photos.
