A Heysham sports centre has revealed plans for a new multi-use games area for football and basketball.
Heysham Mossgate Sports and Community Centre wants to convert two disused bowling greens into a new MUGA (multi-use games area).
They have put in a change of use planning application to Lancaster City Council, for the former bowling greens at Townson Way. The plans also include fencing and floodlights.
The bowling greens have not been used since 2016.
"The former bowling greens were understood to have been in a usable quality when last in operation in 2016, however they have not been maintained since," said a report submitted with the plans.
"The green is now overgrown and degraded, reinstating these greens would require substantial funding to bring the greens up to a playable standard.
"The proposal includes the creation of a multi-use games area which has been designed to meet the needs of a range of users addressing a shortage in all-weather floodlit sporting facilities in the area.
"The proposed MUGAs will use ‘Matchplay 2’, a synthetic surface designed for 3G pitches. The surface is able to support a range of activities including football, basketball and general recreation.
"The surface is long lasting and requires less maintenance than natural grass. It provides a safe playing area for children.
"The MUGAs will support a wider range of users with a greater variety of formats such as 5-a side football. Overall, this scheme will offer greater community benefit than the bowling greens.
"There is no longer a need for a bowling green in this location and no negative impacts will arise from their replacement. The alternative provision of 3G pitches greatly outweighs the single use of the bowling greens.
"The ability to accommodate multiple sports is of benefit including 5v5 or 6v6 football or any other sport."
The council will make a decision on whether to grant planning permission, in due course.
