Reopening Morecambe pub to revert to 'Bradford' name

Bar 1866 will be reverting to its former name of The Bradford

A Morecambe pub will reopen under its previous name which was a nod to the town's relationship with Bradford.

The premises on Queen Street has been known as Bar 1866 since a name change in 2017.

But it was announced on social media this week, that it will be reopening on Friday May 23 under its former name of The Bradford.

"The Bradford is back, reopening on 23/5/25 and it's going to be better than ever," said a post on the new The Bradford Morecambe Facebook page.

"The Bradford is making a comeback and we couldn’t be more excited! Get ready for something special, you won’t want to miss it.

"Spread the word, tag your friends, and keep your eyes peeled for our opening date.

"Big things are on the way... #TheBradfordIsBack."

The Bradford will be run by Chris Donaldson and Jamie Walker, also of The Royal Bar and Shaker in Morecambe, on a leasehold basis.

"We've brought the name back because everyone still calls it the Bradford or the 'Braddy'," said Chris.

Many people from Bradford would holiday in, and/or retire to Morecambe, during its tourism heyday, which led to the town being known as 'Bradford on Sea'.

The pub was known for many years as the Bradford or the Bradford Arms, until changing to Bar 1866 - after the year it was built - following a competition in 2017 to choose a new name.

The name 'The Albert Modley' was initially chosen, after the popular comedian who lived in Morecambe.

But the name 'Bar 1866' was settled on after discussion with Mr Modley's family, who had initially not been informed of the plans.

In more recent years, the premises was run by Proper Pubs, owned by Admiral Taverns.

Admiral sold the pub to new owners in 2024.

In November 2024, plans were revealed for new holiday flats and an ice cream kiosk at the building.

If the plans get the go-ahead, the pub would remain with a refurbishment, with flats on the floors above.

The application is awaiting a decision by Lancaster City Council.
