Talks ongoing over future of Morecambe Frontierland site

The derelict Frontierland site in Morecambe

Talks are continuing over the future of the long-derelict Frontierland site in Morecambe.

Site owners Lancaster City Council, who bought the Marine Road land in 2021, have been in recent discussions over how best to develop the former theme park and further talks are planned.

The ex-fairground has been listed as one of the council cabinet's top four priorities for action in 2022.

Councillor Caroline Jackson, leader of the city council, said in a report published this week, that "council officers met with cabinet members to discuss progress towards action in the development of Morecambe, especially the Frontierland site".

"Strategies need clarification and a further meeting is planned."

The council purchased the land from previous owners Morrisons, due to "concern over the lack of investment and development in the site for more than 20 years".

The Frontierland Wild West theme park closed in 2000.

Since then, various ideas have been brought forward to develop the site.

Two separate plans for retail parks have fallen through.

Most recently, the £17m 'Bay Shopping Park' was given planning permission in 2014, but the project fizzled out.

Beyond Radio asked Mark Davies, the new chief executive of Lancaster City Council, about the future of the site in an interview earlier this month.

"With Morecambe as a whole, there are a huge amount of opportunities," said Mr Davies.

"Eden is one of them, the Frontierland site is another. What we want to do is work with our communities and our businesses to make sure the opportunities there are realised for the benefit of Morecambe.

"This isn't just about something that the council is going to do. We want to co-design these approaches, put things in place that in 100-150 years time, people can see the influence, that these have been built with our communities and also the benefit that it's provided to our communities."
