Tributes have been paid to the man known as the ‘saviour of Morecambe FC’ Ken Ormrod, who has died.
Ken was a legendary figure at the Club, being Club Secretary from the early 1970s until 1991, and played a major role in helping the Shrimps get through some of the worst times in its history in the late 1970s.
Following the Shrimps’ FA Trophy victory at Wembley I 1974, Morecambe suffered a number of years of financial insecurity, and with the Club on the verge of going out of business, Ken is widely credited as the man who ensured the Club’s survival.
In a statement, Morecambe FC said: ‘’(We’re) saddened to hear about the death of former secretary and Life Vice President Ken Ormrod. Everyone at Morecambe Football Club would like to send our condolences to Ken's family and friends at this difficult time.
‘’After being well known in local footballing circles for work as a Sunday League fixture secretary, he took over as Morecambe's secretary and went on to play a huge part in the Club's fortunes before resigning due to illness.
‘’As well as writing a book charting the history of the Club, Ken was recognised by the Shrimps Trust and became one of the first people to be featured on the Legends Wall at the Mazuma Stadium.
‘’Until very recently, Ken was a regular spectator at home games with his wife Teresa and family members, and he will always be remembered for his efforts.’’
Speaking on the sad news, Co-Chairman Rod Taylor said: "Ken was a legendary figure at the club and no one can underestimate the work he, and his family, put into making sure it survived during its most difficult times.
"He was a wonderful man and loved the football Club and he will always be remembered for everything he did and be sorely missed.''
