Two people rescued after boat overturns on River Lune

Emergency services were scrambled to rescue people from the River Lune after their yacht overturned.

A call came in from staff at The Golden Ball at Snatchems to the coastguard, with the Morecambe RNLI station alerted just before 1:40pm on Saturday (June 14), regarding a vessel drifting downstream on the River Lune.

The lifeboat crew arrive at Snatchems by road and quickly assessed the situation thoroughly to determine if there were any missing persons involved, and soon identified an overturned boat.

A boy in the water was rescued by a person on a jet ski, and a second then assisted once the RNLI arrived. Once both people were rescued, the crew went about conducting a comprehensive search of the river, spanning from Glasson Dock to Lancaster, meticulously scanning the area for any additional signs of distress or missing persons.

Morecambe Coastguard Rescue Officers and the Knott-End Coastguard Rescue Team also conducted bankside searches and door to door enquiries all the way to Sunderland Point and Glasson Dock.

A spokesperson for the RNLI said: ‘’This incident also marked Marc Boyd's first ‘shout’ with the RNLI.

‘’Congratulations to Marc for his brave initiation into our team and for his commendable response during this critical operation.

‘’A big thank you to our partner agencies too - Holyhead Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre, the coastguard team of Morecambe, and the Northwest Ambulance Service.’’
