Carnforth 1940s weekend will celebrate 80 years of Brief Encounter film

The famous Brief Encounter film starred Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard

A 1940s weekend to celebrate 80 years of the iconic 'Brief Encounter' film will be held in Carnforth this summer.

The romantic movie, filmed at Carnforth railway station, was released in 1945 and remains an enduring favourite with audiences to this day.

To mark the occasion, Carnforth Heritage Visitors Centre Steering group will be hosting its first 1940s weekend on June 28 and 29, at the railway station in the town.

There will be live music, vintage cars and tractors, military vehicles, model railways, funfair, best dressed competitions, Mr and Mrs Churchill impersonators, jive classes, food and bar concessions, vintage catwalk, vintage stalls, a 40s radio broadcast and miniature children's rail ride.

The Lancashire Belle will be among the performers (pictured below).

The event is free to attend and suitable for all the family.

‘Brief Encounter’ is one of the all-time classic love story films, and starred Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard and was directed by David Lean.

The railway station's heritage centre includes a wealth of memorabilia from the film and a mini cinema showing 'Brief Encounter', as well as memories of Carnforth's railway past.

The 1940s Weekend organising team are looking for volunteers to help marshal, clean, tidy and help at the event.

The event runs from noon to 8pm both days. Anybody wishing to help should please contact Carnforth1940s@gmail.com
