A children's nursery in Morecambe has decided to close later this week for safety reasons due to the forecast of extremely hot temperatures.
Lancaster Road Nursery announced on its social media pages that it would be closed on Thursday June 25, when temperatures are set to soar higher than 30 degrees celsius.
The Met Office has issued an amber warning for Lancashire for likely extreme heat on Thursday.
The nursery on Lancaster Road in Morecambe also said they would limit numbers tomorrow (June 24) when again there is a Met Office amber warning in place.
"We are writing to inform you that, after careful consideration and a full risk assessment, we have made the difficult decision to close the nursery on Thursday 25th June 2026 and limit numbers on Wednesday 24th June 2026 due to the forecast extreme temperatures," said a post on the nursery Facebook page.
"The safety, wellbeing and comfort of the children in our care must always be our highest priority.
"Unfortunately, as we do not have air conditioning, we are unable to maintain a safe and comfortable temperature throughout the nursery.
"We are particularly concerned about our ability to meet safe sleep guidance and ensure suitable sleeping conditions for our youngest children.
"Many of the children are already finding the heat challenging, and the forecast temperatures are expected to increase further.
"To help us manage conditions as safely as possible, we would be extremely grateful if any families who do not absolutely require childcare on Wednesday 24th June 2026 could keep their child at home.
"Lower attendance will allow us to better support the children who need to attend and help maintain a safer environment for everyone.
"If your child attends on Wednesday, please ensure they arrive wearing lightweight clothing and bring a named water bottle and sun hat.
"Any invoices will be adjusted accordingly to reflect the closure and any cancelled sessions. Funded hours will not be affected.
"We understand that this decision may cause inconvenience and appreciate that many families rely on our service. Please be assured that this decision has not been taken lightly. Our responsibility is to ensure that children and staff remain safe during the current heatwave affecting Morecambe and the surrounding area.
"We will continue to monitor the situation closely and review conditions daily. Should there be any further changes or updates, we will communicate these to you as soon as possible.
"Thank you for your understanding, support and cooperation during this period of exceptionally hot weather."
