Gym and drive-through coffee shop plan revealed for Morecambe business centre

PureGym operates more than 450 fitness centres nationally

Plans for a new 24/7 gym and drive-through coffee shop in Morecambe have been revealed.

A planning application has gone in for the new development on land at Mellishaw Lane, Heaton with Oxcliffe.

The proposed gym operator is national chain PureGym, who run more than 450 fitness centres across the UK including in Preston and Kendal.

The full application to Lancaster City Council, on the Mellishaw Lane North Development Site, is for five new buildings to include the gym and fitness centre, drive-through coffee shop, car workshop and MOT bay, EV charging facilities and substation, internal roads, service areas, car parking, landscaping and associated site works.

The around 4,100 square metre brownfield site, close to the Lancaster Volkswagen dealership, is used in part as a temporary car park and is within the White Lund Industrial Estate.

"The units will be modern in appearance and complement commercial development in the vicinity," says a report submitted with the proposals, by applicants Aston Cox Ltd.

"As such, the proposals will significantly enhance the visual appearance of the currently vacant land.

"The proposed development will result in a series of economic benefits, including the creation of circa 30-40 jobs via the drive thru and gym and 28 via the employment units resulting in the creation of 58-68 positions.

"It is intended for both the drive thru unit and gym unit to be operational 24 hours daily.

"It is intended for the drive-thru unit to be occupied by a national operator, and the gym unit by PureGym, who have both agreed to occupy the units upon receipt of a satisfactory planning permission.

"PureGym operates a national network of budget gyms offering equipment based fitness provision, alongside group exercise classes and personal training.

"The proposed PureGym unit would instead provide a focused fitness offer comprising cardio, strength, resistance and functional training equipment, alongside group exercise classes and personal training."

Planning permission was granted earlier this year for four industrial/employment use buildings at the site.

But the report says "this will no longer be delivered in full due to a lack of market interest".

"The proposed development represents the sustainable redevelopment of a vacant brownfield site in a highly accessible location, delivering a mix of uses that complement the White Lund Employment Area, and support economic growth, social wellbeing and environmental objectives," it continues.

"The site is currently unused and provides no active contribution to the local economy.

"We conclude that the application fully accords with both national and local planning policy and should therefore be considered favourably by the council.

"It will have an overall positive effect on the area by way the provision of facilities for which there is a need, as well as high quality design and landscaping. Therefore, we respectfully conclude that planning permission should be granted."

Lancaster City Council will decide whether to grant planning permission, in due course.

The application is available to view in the planning section of the council website lancaster.gov.uk, reference 26/00966/FUL.
