Businesses and organisations who have signed up for a Fair Work Charter have been celebrated at a ceremony in Lancaster.
The event was hosted last week by Lancaster City Council, and brought together local employers from a wide range of sectors, including charities, education, construction, and catering, who have committed to equal and fair employment practices.
The Charter is comprised of five core elements: Fair Pay and Job Security – including working towards paying the Real Living Wage and providing stable, clear employment contracts; Employee Voice and Good Employee Relations – fostering open dialogue with staff and recognising the role of trade unions; Health, Safety and Wellbeing – ensuring safe, supportive workplaces with a proactive approach to physical and mental health; Flexibility, Diversity and Equality – embracing flexible working and inclusive recruitment practices; and Development and Fulfilment – offering opportunities for skills development, apprenticeships, and wider community contribution.
Daniel Braithwaite, principal of Lancaster & Morecambe College, with Councillor Jason Wood from Lancaster City Council

The Charter is a voluntary commitment that employers of all sizes can sign up to - demonstrating that they value their workforce, invest in their people, and contribute to a thriving local economy.
It is not a legal requirement or an accreditation scheme. Instead, it is a public pledge and a practical tool to help employers improve job quality, recruitment, retention, and staff wellbeing.
