The M6 has been closed near Lancaster after a collision involving an HGV which jack-knifed across three lanes.
National Highways: North West said the M6 southbound had been shut between J36 (Kirkby Lonsdale) and J34 (Lancaster) following the incident on Wednesday at around 10.15am.
They said there is also a reported fuel spillage, and emergency services were at the scene.
A police spokesperson said one vehicle was involved and the HGV driver had suffered a minor injury.
The road is expected to remain closed for some time.
Lancaster Area Police said they have closed the motorway in both directions between J34 and J35 and there is heavy traffic at J34 and the Bay Gateway. A spokesperson said the M6 will take "some time to clear" and have advised motorists to avoid the area if you can.
"Specialist recovery will be required to clear the scene, particularly due to the involvement of a heavy goods vehicle," said a National Highways: North West spokesperson.
"This typically involves deploying heavy-duty lifting and recovery equipment. The complexity of these operations can vary depending on vehicle position, load type, and any damage sustained.
"Following recovery, National Highways will need to carry out safety inspections of the carriageway, including checks for damage to safety barriers and any contamination caused by fuel or debris."
Road users are advised to follow the solid diamond diversion symbol visible on local road signs.
- Exit the M6 southbound at J36 and join the A65 towards Kirkby Lonsdale.
- Take a right on to the A683 towards Lancaster.
- Continue on the A683 through Nether, Burrow, Tunstall, Melling, Hornby, Claughton and Caton and re-join M6 at J34.
Please be aware that there is a bridge with a 4.7m / 15'6" height restriction at Caton.
If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time.
