A Lancaster pub will reopen today (June 10) after closing due to fears over the structural safety of a building across the road.

The Tap House on Gage Street will open its doors again from 4pm on Wednesday.

The pub had to be temporarily closed on Sunday afternoon due to safety concerns about the closed-down Collegian social club opposite.

Lancaster City Council said they are working with contractors to make the building safe.

Gage Street and a section of Mary Street remains closed to traffic.

Bill and Karla Johnston from The Tap House announced on Wednesday: "We can now confirm we will be open from 4pm this afternoon.

"Please support us as we get things back to normal."

On Tuesday the Tap House posted: "Pedestrian access is now possible on Gage Street, both past us and around the cordon to Ffrances Passage. The roads remain closed to vehicles.

"If and when we do open please bear with us, especially with cask ales. We may run out of a few things, as deliveries haven't been possible.

"Cask ales are a live product and need the preparation and care you expect.

"We're confident we will be OK with our lager and other draught products. And bottles etc should be fine."

Scaffolding has been erected on the former Collegian Club, which closed last year. See our picture taken on the evening of June 9.

A Lancaster City Council spokesperson said earlier this week: "We’re working with contractors to make the building safe, including installing structural scaffolding to secure the façade.

"Thank you for your patience and understanding while this work is carried out."

Lancaster City Council provided a further update on Wednesday.

"There is no suggestion at present that it would need to be demolished and props have been installed for safety.

"Current situation as of this morning is that further work is being undertaken to erect hoarding around the site, which on completion will allow the road to open safely."

A Lancaster BID (Business Improvement District) spokesperson said: "Following progress on site, the temporary fencing has now been moved back, allowing pedestrian access across the front of the Tap House and through the passageway.

"This should help businesses to reopen and resume trading when it is considered safe to do so.

"However, vehicular access remains restricted at present due to the extent of the structural propping works currently in place.

"Officers are continuing to liaise with us here at BID and affected businesses to provide support and updates, and also working with county council officers to explore potential vehicular access arrangements, particularly in relation to delivery vehicles."

A Lancashire Fire and Rescue Spokesperson said following Sunday's incident: "At 12:33 on 7th June, fire crews attended an incident on Gage Street, Lancaster, involving an unstable structure. Firefighters assessed the scene a before the incident was handed over to a building inspector.

"Crews were in attendance for approximately three hours."
