Around 15 memorial benches will be removed near the site of the planned Eden Project Morecambe and relatives have been asked to come forward.
Lancaster City Council is asking relatives of loved ones who have a memorial bench around the central Promenade site earmarked for the new visitor attraction, to contact them.
The council said they want to discuss the available options for the memorial plaques on the benches.
The benches in question are located in areas including the Harbour Gardens near the wishing well, on the Promenade opposite the Bay Arena car park, and opposite the toilet block overlooking the former Dome and Bubbles site.
A spokesperson said that benches that can be reused will be stored ready to be relocated.
"We’re asking relatives of loved ones who have memorial benches around the site of the proposed Eden Project Morecambe to come forward," said a Lancaster City Council spokesperson.
"As part of the works needed for the attraction, around 15 benches will be removed.
"Nine of the benches have memorial plaques and we’re keen to ensure they are reunited with relatives.
"The inscriptions on the benches can be found on our website.
"If you’re a loved one please get in touch by email to publicrealm@lancaster.gov.uk so we can discuss the available options for the memorial plaque.
"Following their removal the benches that can be reused will be stored at our depot ready for relocation."

Replying to questions and comments from members of the public on the Lancaster City Council Facebook page, a spokesperson said: "Some of these benches are many years old and we don't have contact details for the relatives.
"By asking them to get in touch we can ensure that we have these conversations with them direct and discuss the next steps.
"We know that this will be a very personal decision and people will have different opinions.
"If you know someone who has a relative that is affected, please do pass on the contact details in our post."
Lancaster City Council's memorial benches policy says: "Lancaster City Council will facilitate the purchase and placement of memorial benches in public open spaces owned or managed by the council including parks, countryside sites and streets on request, where appropriate opportunities exist.
"The council receives occasional requests from members of the public who wish to place a memorial bench within a public open space. These are often places with which individuals or families have a particular connection or special relationship."
Work on building the new Eden Project Morecambe is due to start later this year.

The new attraction, by the renowned Eden Project educational charity, is described as a "once in a generation opportunity" for the town and is due to open in late 2028.
