Fines for motorists who enter Lancaster bus gate as camera comes into force

The camera enforcement comes into effect on June 1

A camera to deter motorists from blocking a key bus route into Lancaster will come into effect next week.

The new bus gate enforcement camera has been installed on the one-way system on North Road in the city centre, at a gateway close to Lancaster Bus Station.

Enforcement will commence from June 1, with warning notices issued at first - followed by Penalty Charge Notices to drivers who enter the bus gate when they shouldn’t.

Lancashire County Council said the camera had been installed to "help keep traffic moving while supporting more reliable bus services in the area".

They said bus gates help reduce congestion and keep buses running on time – making public transport a more reliable option for everyone - and advised motorists to please check signage and plan your journey before travelling through the area.

“This scheme is designed to keep traffic moving and make bus journeys more reliable for the people who depend on them," said County Councillor Warren Goldsworthy, cabinet member for Highways and Transport at Lancashire County Council.

“By reducing unnecessary traffic at this location, we can help improve journey times and support public transport in Lancaster.

“We’re asking drivers to take note of the signage and follow the restrictions so they can avoid receiving a penalty.”

A post on the Lancaster District Bus Users Group Facebook page said: "Good to see bus priority being enforced and those who ignore it being made to pay."
