A public meeting in Lancaster this month will set out the path for North Lancashire to achieve a nationally recognised food sustainability award.
North Lancashire food partnership FoodFutures is supporting the region to work towards a Gold Sustainable Food Places Award.
This will involve evidencing and celebrating the amazing work already happening across the Lancaster and Morecambe District, and will support the development of strategic work that aims to create ‘a thriving local food system that is healthy, resilient and fair’.
The public meeting on February 25 is for individuals and organisations interested in supporting this, and will be a final opportunity to share work and plans related to the Gold Award submission.
Those attending the meeting will come away with a better understanding of the Gold Award process, have an opportunity to share their own work and aspirations for inclusion in the campaign, and help shape the next steps for realising the ‘Our FoodFutures’ 10-year community food strategy.
Several big topics will be discussed on the day, including ways to support the next generation around local food systems, and the development of ‘Food Circles’ - how the district can support more food clubs, allotments and growers, community composters and cooks to build local food resilience and food sovereignty.
Also on the agenda will be ‘thinking globally, acting locally’ by reflecting on the wider political landscape, and what this means for local organising in North Lancashire, supporting more regenerative and REcommoning approaches in North Lancashire, and exploring ideas for financing local food system work beyond grant funding.
Attendees will also be well fed and have the chance to connect with others who are doing positive work around food in the district.
“The golden gathering on February 25 is a chance to gather and reflect on what we have achieved so far, and shape where we want to go to," said Anna Clayton, coordinator for FoodFutures North Lancashire.
The North Lancashire is Golden Strategy Day will be held in The Music Room at The Storey in Meeting House Lane, from 10am - 3pm on February 25.
