A Morecambe town centre radio network to help businesses respond to crime and other incidents has received a funding boost.
Morecambe BID (Business Improvement District) has secured additional funding to significantly expand its MoreNet community radio network, enhancing communication and safety across the town centre.
The funding will enable Morecambe BID to increase radio coverage for local businesses and venues who are members of the town Pubwatch scheme.
The investment will see additional radios distributed across the town, helping businesses stay connected, share real-time information, and respond more effectively to incidents.
Lancashire Police will also benefit from increased access, strengthening coordination between officers and the local business community.
The funding was secured through the Community Safety Partnership with support from Clive Grunshaw, Lancashire Police and Crime Commissioner, Clive Grunshaw, and Lizzi Collinge, MP for Morecambe and Lunesdale.
“Communication is key when it comes to keeping our town safe," said Tim Barbary of the Brittlestar wine bar in Morecambe town centre, who leads the Safe Morecambe initiative as part of the BID’s volunteer committee.
"Expanding the MoreNet network means businesses, Pubwatch, and the police can share information quickly and effectively, helping us prevent issues and respond as a joined-up community.
"This is about creating a safer, more confident environment for businesses, residents, and visitors alike.”
The scheme forms part of the BID’s wider Safe Morecambe initiative, which includes investment in CCTV, improved lighting, partnership working with Lancashire Police, and initiatives aimed at reducing anti-social behaviour and supporting town centre resilience.
David Waddington, chair of Morecambe BID who also runs Miogelato in Morecambe, said: “This is exactly the kind of practical investment that makes a real difference to businesses on the ground.
"Expanding the MoreNet radio network strengthens communication, supports partnership working, and gives businesses greater confidence that they are connected and supported.
"It’s another example of how the BID is working proactively to create a safer, stronger town centre.”
Ms Collinge said: “I’m really pleased to support this funding for Morecambe BID.
"Initiatives like the MoreNet radio system make a practical, day-to-day difference—helping businesses stay connected, supporting partnership working, and contributing to a safer town centre for everyone.”
Morecambe BID said they will continue working with partners to roll out the additional radios and ensure businesses are fully supported in using the system effectively.
The BID is a not-for-profit organisation led by a volunteer board of local business representatives, who spend money raised by a levy on improvements to the town centre.
