A national survey has highlighted positive experiences of inpatients at Morecambe Bay health trust.
The National Adult Inpatient survey results, published by the Care Quality Commission, ranked the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust (UHMBT) 26th out of 64 organisations nationally.
Eight three per cent of patients who responded rated their overall experience as 7/10 or more, while 99 per cent said they were treated with respect and dignity, and 99 per cent were treated with kindness and compassion.
The trust rated 'about the same' as other trusts in all categories and most of the questions asked.
They scored 'somewhat better than expected' on getting help from staff (8.6) and nurses' answers to questions (9.1),
The survey looked at the experiences of 58,139 people, across 130 NHS trusts, who were aged 16 or over and had stayed at least one night in hospital as an inpatient during November 2025.
Questions included in the survey followed people’s journeys from admission to hospital, treatment and discharge.
Between January and April 2026, 1,250 people at each participating NHS trust were invited to take part in the survey.
Responses were received from 568 people at University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust.
The trust's scores in various categories were as follows:
Admission to hospital - 6.9 (all scores out of 10)
The hospital and ward - 7.7
Basic needs - 8.1
Doctors - 8.9
Nurses - 8.8
Care and treatment - 8.5
Individual needs - 8
Virtual wards 7.3
Leaving hospital - 7
Kindness and compassion - 9.1
Respect and dignity - 9.3
Overall experience - 8.3
Senior leaders at UHMBT said the trust’s results showed that staff had made improvements and were still delivering positive results for patients despite significant pressures.
“The findings from the annual inpatient survey are a reflection of the improvements we have made across the trust to ensure our patients have a positive experience in our hospitals," said Anna Telfer, Chief Nursing Officer.
“A huge thank you from myself and the executive team to all of the patients who took part in the survey and let us know what we are doing well and what we need to improve. Patient feedback is invaluable and helps us to make the changes we need to make to ensure we are delivering the best possible care for our communities in Lancaster, Barrow and Kendal.
“I’d also like to thank our wonderful staff for everything they do, day in day out, to provide the best possible care to our patients.
“We will now put together action plans to be developed in line with the findings of the inpatient survey.
"We aim to improve our results overall in the coming year and will continue to listen to our patient as to what we need to improve. Improving patient experience and making quality improvements are key parts of our Trust strategy – Putting Patients First.
“Our Patient, Carer Involvement and Volunteering Strategy also involves patients and the public to ensure the highest standards of quality and care.”
UHMBT and other NHS Trusts commissioned Picker, an international charity working across health and social care, to undertake the national survey.
The national survey said that overall results showed "statistically significant improvement across multiple areas of care for a second consecutive year".
The most positive findings nationally came in overall experience, interactions with hospital staff, involvement in care, staff availability and meeting patients' fundamental needs.
The key areas for improvement were involving family and carers in discharge planning, post-discharge care and ward cleanliness.
UHMBT's hospitals and medical centres include the Royal Lancaster Infirmary, the Queen Victoria in Morecambe, Westmorland General in Kendal and Furness General in Barrow.
