A Lancaster county councillor in charge of adult care services in Lancashire has stepped down from the role – just days after launching plans to modernise the system.
Graham Dalton – County Councillor for Lancaster Rural North – has quit as the cabinet member for adult social care at Lancashire County Council.
County Cllr Dalton had led a review into the future of five county council-run care homes and five day centres – including Lancaster’s Vale View - amid concern over the poor condition of their buildings.
Just last week it was confirmed that following a public consultation. it was ultimately decided they would remain open, with an announcement that a new model of care would be developed over the summer to be discussed in September.
The cabinet meeting at which the process was given the go-ahead heard that the new plans would be based on the “co-production” of any changes with “people who draw on care and their families”.
Padiham and Burnley West County Cllr Tom Pickup has now taken over the post.
In a statement, Leader of Lancashire County Council Stephen Atkinson said: “Graham has shown exceptional dedication in this portfolio, playing a pivotal role in bringing adult social care to a point of real transformation.
‘’His experience, insight and unwavering commitment have made a lasting impact and it is clear to all of us just how much he has given to this work.
“I am personally very grateful for everything he has done, and I know many others across the council and our communities share that appreciation.
“I am confident that Tom will continue to develop and strengthen this portfolio and I am delighted that he will be able to draw on Graham’s experience and knowledge as this work progresses.’’
Speaking at the time, Cllr Dalton said: ‘’We need to move on to an eight week programme of co-production, working with the people to whom we deliver this care.
‘’This is a pivotal moment, this is not about change being done to people, it's about working together as equals to build something stronger."
County Councillor Dalton will continue to represent the division of Lancaster Rural North.
