A Lancaster man's 'quackers' canal challenge is capturing the imagination for a very good cause.
Liam Birkett will travel from Preston to Kendal along Lancaster Canal from Monday July 27 to Friday July 31 - making the journey on a giant inflatable duck.
Liam, a support worker for homeless people, admits that the challenge has been described by many as "completely ridiculous" as he prepares to paddle his duck along the canal.
But while the challenge itself is intentionally light-hearted, the cause he is supporting - Healthier Heroes CIC helping veterans and military families - is incredibly important.
LISTEN to Liam Birkett talking about the challenge
"My daughter has already asked if she was definitely mine and not adopted after all - apparently this is the moment she’s questioning my entire genetic contribution to her life choices," says Liam's fundraising page.
"But behind the madness…there’s a reason that means everything to me.
"I’m doing this for Healthier Heroes CIC - a charity supporting veterans and their families.
"This one’s personal.
"I’ve got family currently serving in the Army, and family who are veterans. I’ve seen the pride, the strength, and the sacrifices…but also the battles that don’t just switch off when service ends.
"The quiet struggles. The mental battles. The moments where people feel like they’re on their own.
"That’s where Healthier Heroes step in - providing housing, mental health support, recovery, structure, and a real sense of belonging. They give people a second chance when they need it most.
"So if paddling a giant rubber duck up a canal helps raise awareness and support for those who’ve given so much...then I’ll take the laughs, the sore legs, and the questionable dignity that comes with it.
"I’ll be streaming LIVE on Facebook every single day.
"And each night I’ll be sleeping in a pop-up tent by the side of the canal (so expect tired updates, bad hair, and probably some regret creeping in).
It’s going to be wet, cold, exhausting and absolutely ridiculous…but it’s also going to be worth it.
"Let’s turn something daft into something meaningful.
"May the Quack Be With You."
A further update from Liam said: "Huge thank you to everyone who’s donated so far! Your support has officially pushed me past 'charity fundraiser' and into 'middle-aged man having a duck-based breakdown'.
"I now own duck pyjamas, duck boxers and duck socks. At this point, if I fall into the canal I’m legally required to migrate for winter.
"Seriously though — thank you all so much."
At time of writing, £340 had been raised from the online page.
