A striking new artwork celebrating Lancaster’s skyline has been donated to help raise funds for a much-loved community space.
Local artist James Mackie has gifted a limited edition framed print of his newly completed painting, inspired by the view from Miss Whalley’s Field, to the Friends of Miss Whalley’s Field community group and it will be sold off to the highest bidder.
The friends’ group looks after the space in partnership with the council and the funds from the sale will enable the group to continue with further improving the space with the help of our parks and open spaces team.
It took James almost two years to complete the large-scale painting after being inspired not only by the landscape, but by the people caring for it.
After learning more about the work of the Friends’ group, he attended their recent AGM and pledged to support their efforts.
Paul Wiggins, Chair of the Friends of Miss Whalley’s Field, said: “He was amazed at what local volunteers have achieved.
“This donation is a really generous way of recognising and supporting the group’s work in looking after and improving this valuable green space.”
The portrait traces Lancaster’s architectural history, with buildings spanning Roman and Norman roots through to Georgian, Victorian and modern developments and was unveiled for the first time at a special event held at the artist’s studio in Dalton Square.
The print will soon go on public display at The Gregson Community Centre, giving residents a chance to view the artwork up close before it is sold.
Details of the sale and how to bid will be available in the coming weeks.
