Tradition has it that Freemen and Freewomen of Lancaster are allowed to 'pasture a limited number of beasts'.
But today this unlikely honour is rarely taken up by those who are given the Freedom of the City.
That is, until now!
Margaret Pattison, Mayor of Lancaster, to mark the end of her year in office this May, is calling for Freemen and Freewomen of the city of Lancaster from the past decade, to join her at a farm to walk some sheep.
Beyond Radio's Duncan Moore, who was made a Freeman of Lancaster is 2025, will be among those taking part.
"The Freedom of the City is an ancient office dating back over 300 years with one of the basic privileges being the right to pasture a number of beasts on Lancaster Marsh," said Councillor Pattison.
"We can't do it on the Marsh so I have made arrangements with a local farmer at Quernmore, for the Freemen and Freewomen to re-live this.
"This tradition could go into the archives when the Unitary Authority comes in.
"The farmer will be flocking his sheep alongside Freemen and Freewomen.
"This will take place for the first time."
The event will be on Sunday May 10 at 10.30am.
Today the honour of Freeman of the City carries few rights but is popular among those who are proud of their heritage.
Traditionally it carried a number of privileges also including to enter the city free from the payment of tolls, and to bring goods through toll gates for sale at the Lancaster Market.
If you are a Freeman or Freewoman of the City of Lancaster who received the honour over the past decade, and are interested in taking part in this event, please email mayor@lancaster.gov.uk
