A campaigner from Morecambe has called for Lancashire Police to "come clean" over use of a controversial AI tool due to worries over data privacy.
Rowan Fitton has written to the Police and Crime Commissioner over his fears about Lancashire Constabulary's use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology from US tech giants Palantir.
Palantir Technologies Inc, based in Miami, is a leading data integration and analytics software company.
It specialises in artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, commonly used by countries for surveillance, border enforcement, policing and warfare.
There are widespread concerns over how sensitive personal data could be accessed through use of its systems, criticism which Palantir has rejected.
Mr Fitton, from the North Lancashire Liberal Democrats, said: “Our right to privacy is sacred.
"Lancashire Police need to be crystal clear about why Palantir was chosen as a supplier, given the growing number of concerns around privacy and effectiveness.
"The public also has a right to know what their data may be used for, where it’s being taken from, and why it’s being shared.
“I have written to the (Police and Crime Commissioner Clive Grunshaw) demanding he take this issue seriously and provide reassurances to the people of Lancashire that their private data is being used responsibly.
"I look forward to his response detailing how he will ensure that Lancashire Police are being open and transparent in their dealings with Palantir."
Lancashire Police said it has been looking into how AI-driven technologies can help with policing and said "all due diligence" was taken while procuring the services of Palantir.
A Lancashire Police spokesperson said: "The Constabulary continues to explore how AI driven technologies can assist policing, and as part of this approach procured the services of Palantir via the appropriate route utilising Softcat for IT Services.
"As is common practice, informal meetings were held with the supplier to understand the capabilities and to see a demo of the product.
"All due diligence was undertaken as part of this procurement process as is the case with all our suppliers.
"We are confident we have all the necessary safeguards in place to ensure the data we hold is secure."
Mr Grunshaw said: "I appreciate the concerns raised around the use of AI in policing.

"Whilst I have received assurance that Lancashire Constabulary has followed all required procurement procedures and due diligence processes in relation to Palantir, I have requested additional information to further scrutinise this area of work.
"Data safety must remain a priority while we explore the benefits AI can bring to support policing."
