A popular coffee shop in Lancaster city centre will close after more than seven years due to rising costs.
18a on Brock Street will shut down at the end of April, owner Luiza Woods announced.
The cafe, previously known as Brew, won Coffee Shop of the Year and chef Mark Potter won Employee of the Year at the Love Lancaster Business Awards in 2025.
"After a lot of thought we've made the difficult decision to close the business," said a post from Luiza on the 18a social media pages.
"This hasn't been an easy choice. Running a business comes with a lot of pressure behind the scenes, and the time has come for us to step away and put the energy into a different part of our life.
"The reality is year on year increases have taken their toll. Hospitality is under real pressure, and it's left us without the reserves to continue safely.
"Rather than risk putting ourselves or our team in a worse position, we've made the decision to step away now.
"What we've built here means more to us than I can put into words, and is the hardest decision I've ever had to make.
"We will continue to trade until the end of April to say goodbye to the customers, the shop and the happy memories.
"To me, the team and to all our customers, it will always be remembered as Brew.
"I kindly ask that you respect the team. The decision was not theirs and I'd really appreciate that they're not put in a position to answer questions as it's an emotional time for us all."
Customers of the cafe posted messages of support on Facebook.
Chris said: "Sad news. It's a lovely little cafe and will be sorely missed."
Nearby clothing business Waterhouse said: "Really sorry to learn and read this post today.
"To lose one of our neighbours on Brock St is never easy but we wish you all at Brew brighter days ahead. Good luck and best wishes for the future."
Liane said: "I’m so sorry to read this. We love Brew. Wishing you all the best of luck for whatever comes next."
Beca said: "Not a light decision at all. Sending a huge hug from a former shop owner."
